Vijay Sethupathi, known for his versatile roles, has come up with a new web series Kaattaan, a revenge thriller directed by National Award winner Manikandan. The series is streaming on Jio Hotstar and is produced by Vijay Sethupathi himself. Now, the question is whether this series has impressed the audience or not. Let’s find out in the review.
Kaattaan Story: In a village near a forest, a police station faces closure due to no cases for years. When a severed head is found, a constable and an SI begin an investigation and discover the victim is Muthu alias Kaattaan. As they dig deeper, multiple stories and connections come out, revealing several mysteries around his life and death. Whether they uncover the truth forms the rest of the series.
Performances: Kaattaan turns out to be a one-man show for Vijay Sethupathi, who appears in almost every scene and impresses with different shades, from a lover to a revenge-driven man. His performance stands out.
Milind Soman and Sudev Nair have limited roles. VJ Paarvathy and Richa Jacob impress with natural acting, while Kali Pandian adds some entertainment with his good comedy timing.
Technical Aspects: Vijay Sethupathi not only plays the lead in Kaattaan but also produces the series, ensuring high production quality throughout. The visuals and making feel like a feature film. While director Manikandan comes up with a good story, the screenplay lacks impact in key moments.
Vijay Sethupathi gets strong elevation scenes, and Rajesh Murugesan’s background score adds to the intensity. The series also features a few songs.
Analysis: With changing OTT trends, audiences now prefer fast-paced and engaging content with strong twists. Kaattaan has a good concept and uses a non-linear narrative around Muthu’s life, mixing love, action, and revenge. While some twists work and the suspense is maintained, the series feels slow and stretched. It could have been more effective with fewer episodes and tighter storytelling.
Verdict: A good concept and strong performance by Vijay Sethupathi, but slow pacing and lengthy narration make Kaattan an average watch.
Bottom Line: Decent thriller held back by pacing.
Rating: 2/5
